  • Mesh Opening: 3-1/4″ x 4-1/2″ hex  nominal (8 x 10 cm)
  • Wire Size: 11ga (0.120 – 3mm)
  • Wire spec: QQW-461H, STM-A641, available in galvanized steel and galvanized steel with PVC protective coating.

In severely corrosive environments or in seaside locations, the use of heavily zinc-coated and PVC-coated wire mesh is recommended. The wire with PVC coating is 12ga (0.106 – 2.7mm) and finished dia (0.146 – 3.7mm). PVC is applied to the wire core by the extrusion method. This characteristic does not alter the remarkable flexibility or tensile strength of the product.

INSTALLATION GUIDE

  1. The edges of the panels shall be wired or fastened to each other to form a continuous covering. The lacing wire shall be tightly looped around every other mesh opening along the edges in such a manner that single and double loops are alternated. • The alternative wire fastener shall be applied at approximately 12 inch (30.5 cm) intervals on both vertical and horizontal lap on each side of the overlap.
  2. In the curve stretches of the slope or in order to avoid weakening the protective structure, the net shall not be cut to shape the curve and overlaps of the netting shall be allowed.
  3. On the slopes where a wire cable/rope grid system is designed, tie wires used for lacing the wire mesh to the wire rope shall be galvanized steel and shall be laced horizontally and vertically
  4. Alternative wire fasteners shall be allowed in lieu of the galvanized tie wire when spaced at 12 inches. The wire rope used to establish the grid shall be 3/8 to ¾ inches

Anchoring – General Information Only

  • Prestressed Rock Anchors: For anchors using steel bars, the free-stress length (the portion of the anchor not bonded to the rock) should be at least 10 feet, according to the Post-Tensioning Institute.
  • Mechanical Rock Anchors: The embedment depth includes the free-stress length and the length of the mechanical head assembly.
  • Mesh Anchors (for rockfall protection): Simple or double expansion bolts (0.4-0.8 inches in diameter) can be used in fissured hard rock, installed at 3.3- to 6.6-foot centers, says Stormwater Solutions.
  • Resin or Mortar Anchors: For compact rock subject to deterioration, consider using a series of 0.5- to 0.9-inch diameter hooked steel reinforcing bars installed with mortar or resin.
  • Driven Anchors: In compact soils, 3.3- to 4.9-foot steel reinforcing bars (65-100 feet in diameter) can be driven into the ground and fitted with a hook.
  • Rock Bolt Anchors: For mesh applied close to the slope to prevent rock fragments, anchors with diameters of 1-1.25 inches may be used, installed every 16-23 feet.

Additional Considerations:
Catchment Area: The catchment area (the area where the mesh or barrier is placed) is often terminated approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the slope base.

Snow Accumulation: In areas with heavy snowfall, the termination height may need to be increased to prevent the mesh from being pinned by snow.
